Top 10 Moments of 2012

2012 has been such a fun year for all of us at Tenth Avenue Nation! Not only did we get the chance to launch our site, but Tenth Avenue North put out a new record, set off on their biggest headlining tour yet, released another festive Christmas song, performed some funny covers, and so much else! As the year comes to a close, we’re counting down the top 10 moments of the year as voted by YOU on our holiday website earlier this month. So which events were voted the best of the year? Let’s take a look!

Honorable Mention: iTunes Sessions EP

The EP was released too late to be put on our list, so it wasn’t on the ballot for voting this year – but we had to include it somewhere! This project was recorded last Summer down in LA and was super secret – due to strict iTunes rules, nobody could share the release date or information. But on December 18, it was unveiled for all to hear. Click HERE to purchase your copy!

10. Higher (Tenth/Lecrae Project)

In addition to the new album, EP, and other music put out by the band this year, Mike contributed his time to work on a project with popular Christian artist Lecrae. First premiered in July 2012 at an acoustic concert aftershow, the band shared that the track would probably be making its way onto Lecrae’s newest record. “Higher” was offered as a bonus download for iTunes orders of the album, and is now available for individual purchase. Mike is featured in the chorus and Ruben on bass. Click HERE to purchase the song from iTunes!

9. “O Holy Night” Christmas Song

As part of the compilation project available exclusively at Family Christian Stores, It Happened One Night, Mike recorded a solo version of the popular holiday tune “O Holy Night.” The track was available in early October and can be purchased only through ordering the CD HERE. Get it before it’s gone – the CDs are only available while supplies last! All proceeds go to benefit the International Justice Mission.

7. Mike’s Acoustic Live Stream at BigStuf Camp

All around the world, listeners sat with earphones plugged in and smiles on their faces as Mike joined Jon Foreman, Mac Powell, Rend Collective Experiment, and other artists for an acoustic night of worship tunes. For those who watched, this one seems to be a favorite – I’ve heard stories of friends gathering around the computer with a guitar to play along, couples tuning in for the night, and some even blasting the audio outside for all to hear. Many enjoyed the acoustic version of “Times” on this warm summer night – if you missed the event, watch a video below:

6. 10 to 10 on the 10th

Well, we all got antsy. Instead of waiting until the August 21st release date, Tenth Avenue North put up a live stream on their website on August 10th for 10 hours. Called “10 to 10 on the 10th”, listeners could hear every track from the new album from 10 am to 10 pm. For the first time, tracks from The Struggle made their way out to the world – and the response was overwhelming. In between listens, we held discussion topics over on Tenth Avenue Nation and in our community. But the one point everyone could agree on? The Struggle was going to go places.

5. Beyond Words Project

We announced on July 9, 2012 that we would be starting our first ever site project! It was called “Beyond Words”, named after the Tenth Avenue North song, and the objective was simple: to write letters to the band. Once the letters were all submitted, we would compile them into a book and hand it over to the guys on August 7, 2012! From July 9-20, over 40 letters filled with messages from the heart flooded in from around the world and the book was soon printed. We gave the book to the guys and they were thrilled to get it! They recorded a video thanking fans who sent in letters:

A few photos of the book:

What did the band have to say about the book?

Here’s one the guys posted on their instagram of Alex, them, and the book:

Mike posted this photo, saying, “On a plane to NYC, in tears reading these letters that Tenth Avenue Nation put together. Thank you so much for sharing your stories!”

Mike tweeted a line from a letter:

A video later surfaced of Mike talking about us and the Beyond Words book with Sirius XM radio: (Skip to 1:26)

The entire project was a huge success and the band LOVED the book. Thanks to all who submitted letters!

4. “Losing” Music Video

The official music video for the hit single released on August 7, 2012. During a concert in VA in June, fans at the show were able to be in the video by participating in the crowd shots. For sure one of the coolest videos that Tenth Avenue North has made:

Can’t wait to see what they put out for the upcoming “Worn” music video. Honorable mention? Our friends at Tenth AveNerds released this sweet iPhone-style lyric video to the tune:

3. The Struggle Tour

After releasing their third album, Tenth Avenue North set off on their biggest headlining tour to date with special guests Rend Collective Experiment and Audrey Assad. With revolutionary lighting, sound, and new tricks, this tour is unarguably their most energy-packed yet. From wacky song covers to acoustic sets in the crowd, every show was unique and up-close. Palm Beach Atlantic University, a sponsor from the tour, sent along their friend Johnny to keep a blog diary and take some photos. Check out a few:

The Struggle Tour was such a blast, and lucky for us, it’s not finished! Tenth Avenue North will be continuing the tour this Spring – dates should be up early this month. Stay tuned!

1. The Struggle Releases

On August 21, 2012, all of the anticipation, the waiting, the counting, and the longing all came to a stop. For the first time, The Struggle hit shelves worldwide and the album released for the world to hear. With 26,000 copies selling in just its first week, the album debuted on #9 in the Billboard 200, #1 in Billboard Rock, #1 in Billboard Christian, and #5 in Billboard Digital Albums. The record topped the iTunes Christian and secular charts, and the band even grabbed a chunk of space on the iTunes homepage. The Struggle surely triumphs as the best moment of the year; two years of hard work were put into this record, and it payed off as being one of the best works that Tenth Avenue North has EVER released.
